Maputo is the capital and is located in country’s south very near to the Swazi and South African Borders. Getting to Maputo from Johannesburg using scheduled buses takes only about 8 hours while from Nelspruit it only takes about 6 hours. Bus services also leave for Swaziland every hour from just east of the central market. While you are in the capital make sure not to miss visiting the train-station which was designed in 1910 by Gustave Eiffel and with its unique design signifying the western influence on the local buildings and infrastructure.
A visit to the central market is worth it if you want to experience traditional life and enjoy seafood. Prawns are Mozambique’s speciality and are brought by dusk in the market by the fishermen by the truckload. Maputo’s fish market is also an interesting place to visit if you have got some extra time to spare and watch the local fishermen unloading their best catch in the market before entering into the town.
