The Okavango Delta also known as the Okavango Swamp is the labyrinth of lakes, lagoons and covered channels, encircling the land area of about 17,000 square kilometres and is declared to be the largest inland delta of the world that is located in Botswana. The rainfall water that gathers in Angola highlands is drained by the Okavango River in summers and the efflux flows for almost 1,200 kilometres. From March to June, the water blankets the delta over an area of about 250 by 150 kilometres. Approximately 11 cubic kilometres of water fills the Delta annually and almost 60 per cent is used by the plants in the process of transpiration, 2 per cent for aquifer system, 36 per cent by evaporation and 2 per cent surges into the Ngami Lake. The delta also houses the Chief’s island which was created by the discontinuity or a fracture in the rock volume over the land which has the width of about 15 kilometres and a length of 70 kilometres.
The Okavango Delta acts as a seasonal as well as a permanent home for an extensive wildlife variety, which is a source of great attraction for the visitors.
