The Masai Mara National Reserve is premier wild-life park of Kenya and was established in 1961 to get the wild-life protected from hunters. It is located 168 miles from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Visiting the Masai Mara National-Reserve is one of the primary reasons for people travelling to Kenya and they don’t get disappointed because of the wild-life variety it has to offer.
The first step involved in visiting The Masai Mara National-Reserve requires planning and booking of affordable cheap flights to Nairobi. Masai Mara Reserve lies in south-western Kenya on Tanzania’s border situated in Rift Valley with Serengeti plains of Tanzania running along its southern end. Running through the national-reserve is the Mara River (from the north towards the south) which is home for many hippos as well as crocodiles. The Masai Mara consists of hilly grasslands fed by a lot of rain, particularly between Nov-June during the rainy season. The areas that border the river are forested and host quite a variety of bird species.
The speciality of Kenya’s premier park lies in the rich diversity and dense concentration of wild-life it has including Lions, Leopards, Cheetah, giraffe, Hyenas, wildebeest, impala, baboons, topi, buffalos, warthogs, elephants, zebras and many of the bird’s species. The best time to be with the rich wildlife is at dawn or dusk. As the reserve lacks any man-made fences, one can see the rich wildlife inside the reserve as much as local tribes located outside the reserve can. It’s not surprising to see 5-6 safari-vehicles with tourists taking photos of a lion with its kill, within the boundaries of the reserve.
Apart from that if visitors feel a need to fuel their adrenaline they always can try a walking-safari outside the boundaries of the reserve. Going for a cultural tour of a traditional Maasai village is also a good idea and is often included in standard safari packages. If you have some extra money with you, you may enjoy Hot-Air-Ballooning that provides a unique experience. The Hot-Air-Balloon flights mostly take place at dawn and last for about one hour.
There are plenty of accommodation solutions for you in the Masai Mara including luxury accommodations having the best hospitality services in Africa. Other than the hotels, visitors can also opt for Lodges as well as tented camps inside the national-reserve including Mara Serena Lodge (luxury Lodge) that is situated on a hilltop that overlooks the Mara river. Other famous lodges include Keekorok and Mara Simba Lodges. Apart from Lodges, tented camps like the Sarova Mara Camp and the Mara Intrepids Club are also easily accessible and well situated.
As the reserve is not fenced and is open, there exists almost equal wild-life variety in both inside and outside the reserve. That means you can also choose to stay outside the premises of the reserve. The famous camping sites outside the reserve include Siana Springs Camp, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge and Fig-Tree Camp. So pack up and get ready for an adrenaline-fueled journey to wild-Africa and meet the wildlife firsthand.
