In the ancient times, Aswan and its surrounding areas were known as Nubia and even today you can observe that Aswan has a comparatively more African-feel than any other of Egypt’s city. Nubian Cultural Center is a good place to start with.
Lying on Nile’s east bank, Aswan provides you with an opportunity to relax and enjoy yourself. You can start by visiting the local mosques but don’t get too relaxed as there is an adventure waiting for you. You can visit the bazaar running along the Corniche further continuing past the Ferial-Gardens and Nubian Museum till reaching the cemetery. To the south of the site, two of the Graeco-Roman sarcophagi along with an unfinished colossus still remain half-buried under the sand.
On the west bank, there are many places to see with the first being Tombs of the Nobles & Kubbet al Hawa. West bank’s northern hills have many rock-hewn tombs from prices of the old kingdom to the Roman period. Inside of the tombs is decorated with vivid and bright paintings illustrating everyday life scenes, hieroglyphic-biographies and inscriptions telling the journey of the noblemen into Africa.

Dating back to the seventh century is the Monastery of St. Simeon which is still in used and home to about 300 monks and has the capacity of hosting about 100 pilgrims at a time. It is surrounded by a wall ten meter high and is also doubled as a fortress. One of the other major attractions is the Elephantine Island which is the largest of Aswan Islands and is also one of Egypt’s most ancient sites with its artefacts dating back to the pre-dynastic times. The reason behind the city being so ancient is perhaps its location at Nile’s first Cataract providing a natural boundary between Nubia and Egypt. Secondly, as it was an island, therefore, it was comparatively easier to defend. The important places you can visit on the Island include the Nilometer, the temple of Khnum and Animalia.
The Botanical-Gardens of the Kitchener Island is also someplace you won’t like to miss as the island itself is a botanical garden which is filled with some exotic plants & trees imported from around the world. If you intend to spend a relaxing afternoon in the shade, this place will satisfy your need. The only way to get to the island is by boat and is located at the other side of the Elephantine Island from Aswan. Lord Kitchener was given this Island for his services in Sudan thereafter he moved and created the garden and planted trees and flowers there which were imported from all around the world.
