The story of naming the place goes back to Reverend Dirk van der Hoff who in 1854 established here a congregation and afterwards in 1860, Pretoria became the centre of the Transvaal Govt. therefore many important buildings were built in the city around the Church Square. The most important of the buildings was the Govt. building referred to as the Raadzaal with the Palace of Justice being at the opposite side.
