Meru’s summit and the ash-cone’s view.
If you are a nature enthusiast, you won’t be disappointed by the rich variety of animals present there and the place is a heaven for the nature lovers. What makes the park special is also the fact that you can observe the wildlife in their natural habitats. If you are willing to take a step further and are ready for the adventure, you can climb up the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and be amazed by the spectacular views it and the Rift Valley offers.
The 3 of the main distinct areas you can observe in the Arusha National Park are the Momela Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater and the rugged Mount Meru with altitudes ranging from 1,500 meters above the sea level at Momela to above 4,500 meters at Meru’s summit. The area’s altitude and geography drives the vegetation it supports with the Ngurdoto Crater being surrounded by the forest whereas the crater floor being a swampy area. On the other hand like many of the Rift Valley areas, The Momela Lakes are alkaline with Mount Meru being a mixture of bare rocks and lush forests.
As the vegetation of the area depends upon its geography and physical characteristics of the area, same is the case with the animals the park is home to. You’ll find migrating water birds which settle on the lakes while the waterbucks and the reedbucks can easily be spotted near water. Bushbucks and duikers on the other hand are shy and reserve themselves to the forested areas.
You can’t be certain where and when you may encounter any particular species of animals or birds but you can however make a calculated guess about where to find one. The area is so rich with birds that you can find about 4,000 species of them in the habitat ranges with some of them being migratory and visiting the park between October till April while other are permanent residents of the Park.
