The Chobe National Park was established in 1968 and covers about 11,700 squares Km and is home to encompassing floodplains, woodland and swamps. Its northern-boundary is formed by the Chobe River and the park consists of four-distinct geographical areas i.e. The Ngwezumba pans, the Chobe riverfront, Linyanti. The most famous and accessible of all the destinations in Botswana is the Chobe river front which is well known for the large herds of elephants it hosts and also the cape buffalos that converge during the dry season upon the river to drink. During this dry season you can see hundreds of these elephants around you and the main Serondella road even become blocked as they are passing by.
While driving the loops near river edges you can see nearly fifteen species of animals during one game drive which include lechwes, waterbucks, pukus (unique to Botswana), kudus, giraffes, roans & sables, impalas, warthogs, monkeys, bushbucks and baboons to name a few. You can also get a chance to see Lions, Leopards, jackals and hyenas up-close.
You can also take a river cruise allowing you to get up-close to hippo, crocodiles and a surprising variety of water birds as over 460 different bird species exist in the park making the park one of the most desired sites for the bird safaris. Some of the common bird species that you can easily see including the Sacred Ibis, Spur winged geese, Egyptian Geese etc. Located about 70 kilometers south of the Chobe River are the Ngwezumba pans which comprise of large complex of clay-pans and surrounded by mophane-woodlands & grassland-plains.
The permanent waters of Linyanti can prove to be an excellent site to visit during the dry-winter-months and it falls within the boundaries of the Chobe National Park sandwiched between east’s hunting concessions and west’s photographic concessions.
Savute is situated inside the national park and hosts most of the animal species found in Chobe and is famous for large populations of its Lions, Cheetahs and hyenas. Flowing from the Linyanti River for approximately 100 KM, the Savute channel carries water away from the river and releases it into the vast swampland known as the Savute Marsh and even further into the Mababe Depression. It hosts thousands of migrating animals and birds including huge herds of Zebras when it gets filled with water.
