There used to be a time when the Globe & Phoenix mine around which the town was developed was the world’s biggest gold mine. The local mining-museum speaks of the boom days of the area with its Paper House which is a wood reinforced cardboard-affair in striking white and green colours. The two-bedroom dwelling on the stilt (the possible purpose may have been to be protected from the termites and combating heat) was the first mine manager’s home where Cecil John Rhodes also slept once who was the controversial colonial-empire builder and founder of the region from which Zimbabwe emerged at is independence in the 80s known as Rhodesia.
Kwe Kwe which was formerly known as “Que Que” as of today is a robust business-centre home to about 200,000 people served by the main rail-links and national-roads. You’ll also find even a small aerodrome there boasting typical commercial-enterprises one may normally expect from a small African-town. Most of the industry, however, is located in the surroundings of the steel-works and other associated manufacturing and chemical plants.
There are two main hotels in the town namely the Golden Mile and the Shamwari which caters for the business-travellers. You’ll also find plenty of chalet-accommodation at many of the breezy lodges like Touchwood and these chalet-accommodations have emerged to cope with the overflow. Kwe Kwe is also famous among cricket fans as sports fans have worked really hard there to make sure that Kwe Kwe is there on the map of sports. Many of the internationally-televised cricket events have taken place in the renovated facilities of the Kwe Kwe Sports-Club against many strong teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
You may find many small tourist operators maintaining photographic safari licenses and hunting in the areas near the farms and the concessions near the town despite the fact that they are facing severe intrusion from the Government. Whatever their methods may be, you’ll find the wildlife in abundance in these areas including Elephants, Leopards, Rhinos, Lions and the biggest of antelopes including Kudu, Sable, Eland and Tsessebe. We can hope that the richness and diversity of the wild-life inhibiting these areas remain the same as they are under constant threat from humans.
Kwe Kwe is and always has been a social and festive centre with its warm inhabitants and a political atmosphere that’s quite mild and not extreme like other areas of the region. One is expected to enjoy his or her visit to Kwe Kwe and hopefully will remain in the memory of its visitor for the rest of his/her life.
