If you get a chance to visit only one place in Egypt, what will you choose? Some will choose Cairo, the medieval city with a rich culture, while others will choose Sharm el Sheikh with its sandy beaches and lively nightlife. But the place that we will recommend is the religious and political capital of Egypt’s Middle and New Kingdoms, the Luxor. This is truly the premier travel destination of Egypt with thousands of visitors flocking this historical place each year to witness some of the most precious artefacts and architecture of ancient Egypt.
Luxor has its own airport and if it is the only reason for your arrival in Egypt then many airlines across Europe offer direct flights to Luxor. The city is small but its one of the most well-planned cities of Egypt and there are many hotels within the city where you can find affordable accommodation. The archaeological sites are close to the city and the first place that you will want to visit is the Temple of Karnak. Well, it is more than a temple; it’s a gigantic complex of sanctuaries, obelisks, pylons and kiosks that span over an area of 2 sq. km and has 10 cathedrals dedicated to the ancient gods of the past. The place is fascinating and to do them justice with this marvellous site you should plan a complete day visit to the place. The best way of exploring the place is in the company of a seasoned guide.
The next place to visit is the Valley of the Kings, with its 63 tombs of the kings of different dynasties and the architecture of each one of them is totally different from the other. The site is stretched for miles and you will need a guide here to explore it properly. On the west bank, you will find the tombs from the era as back as 2000 BC. Many of the tombs that are in the shape of pyramids are open for the tourist and each one of them is a historical treasure in itself. Temple of Hatshepsut is the most dazzling of all the sites in the valley, located between the 300 m cliffs in the middle of the desert; it is the most magnificent temple in Luxor.
Back at the city of Luxor, you can pay a visit to Luxor Museum which has the artefacts and relics from the Middle Kingdom to the rule of the Memlukes that ended in the medieval ages.
