One thing that has always attracted the tourists towards Africa is its exotic and magnificent wildlife. Although almost all of the African countries have their fair share of animal population but Tanzania and Kenya has always been the favorites of the foreign tourists.
The reason is the comparably better tourism infrastructure of these countries than their neighbors. I am not saying their national parks like Serengeti are not a great place for game viewing but they are certainly not the only national park worth visiting in the continent. With the recent improvement of tourism infrastructure in many of the African countries the tourist traffic has started to flow in the direction of their national parks as well.
Like its other African neighbors Zambia has also improved its infrastructure to a large extent and its national parks are fast becoming famous with the game viewing enthusiasts worldwide. The premier national park of Zambia is the Lower Zambezi National Park which was once used to be neglected by the tourists thinking of it as a small mismanaged national park in a country with rampant corruption and law and order problem. But with the improved security condition of Zambia and efforts of the Zambian authorities in making the tourist facilities according to world standard, Lower Zambezi National Park is getting quite a lot to tourist traffic these days.
The best option for getting into Zambia will be to take a cheap flight to Lusaka the capital of the country. You can hire a car for making the journey to the park which is on a two hour drive from Lusaka or you can travel with the local bus service that runs between the two places.
Although the park has a high population of many African animals but the biggest attraction of the park are its elephants of which you can find quite a lot of herds grazing in the park. The best experience in the Lower Zambezi is watching these elephants swim in the Zambezi River especially at the end of the day. You can follow these elephants in the river by hiring a boat from the nearby lodges. The best way to explore the park is by doing it in a 4wd that can either be hired from Lusaka or from the park rangers.
You don’t really need to hire the services of a park ranger here to provide you a guided tour as it is a comparably smaller national park with less dangerous animals and you can easily explore it by your self. Another highlight of the park is its hippos that can be found in hundreds of numbers in the Zambezi River. A few years back we would have recommended you to arrive early in the park, spend a few hours there and then head back to Lusaka because there was not a single quality lodge in the area. But as I said earlier the infrastructure has massively improved here so you can easily find a lodge that suits your taste a budget in the park.
