Whether you are a packrat or a wayward nomad, you still need some kind of basic information on what you will need when packing for your ultimate getaway trip to Fiji. So don’t waste any time and book cheap flights to Fiji while we decide what you should pack.Depending on where you will stay and for how long is important. If you are staying at a resort or hotel then your list of must-pack can be shorter as simple things like towels and toiletries are provided by all resorts. But if you are staying at a hostel then we recommend you carry more basic things like a portable mini bucket and clothes pins as this will ease you in doing your own laundry without losing it and your own mobile bathroom. Some of the most basic things that are essential for all are sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
Forget tan, the sun here can very easily bake you so be sure to carry your own sunscreen whenever you go out during the day, and the mosquitoes are aplenty in this part of the world and can endanger a good night’s sleep so, consider yourself warned and make sure you have enough mosquito repellent especially if you go out camping. It tends to get very balmy especially after the rain so stock up on deodorant too.
When packing clothes make sure you carry light and loose cotton shirts and long shorts for guys and loose cotton blouses and dresses for women and most comfortable in this place. But just as your swimsuits are a must, then know that carrying at least one jacket/sweater/hoodie is important too because it can get slightly chilly by nighttime. If you forget something then that is okay too as there are plenty of shops selling shirts, bikinis, sun-hats, flip-flops etc. at bargain prices near all resorts and these items can pose later as souvenirs of your trip. Make sure you have comfortable sneakers for when you go trekking and sandals when you visit the corals. Some places offer sandshoes for hire, but carrying your own is much more convenient.
When visiting the villages make sure you take off your hats as the traditional Fijians consider the head to be sacred and the chiefs can take offence if you leave it covered in their presence. For the women, it is best to wear a sarong and shirt on top of your swimwear when you visit the village as the villagers respect it if you keep your knees and shoulders covered.
Some other important things to carry are backpacks that have a steady balance and easy on your shoulders and back, keep smaller bags within your bag in case you want to leave your clothes or other unnecessary items at the hostel and try to pack as light as possible when going for trekking etc. in the hot and humid weather of Fiji you may need to walk for hours and a heavy backpack can really cut your shoulders. Make sure you have cash when you travel as there are rarely any ATMs on the island and very few places accept credit cards, so cash and its safety are the most important things that should be on your mind.
If you can afford it, try and take your own scuba gear when you go out on the cruise or boat rides as the water is amazing and unfortunately very few offer scuba diving gear or usually it’s not for everyone. And underwater camera is also a must as the corals are beautiful and ordinary cameras are unable to capture their beauty from above. Try carrying a guidebook, most people try not to so they won’t seem too touristy but trust us, in a place as exotic as Fiji it can save your life. And carrying family photos is also a plus point when interacting with the locals. They love seeing your pictures from back home and even the shyest people may step forward and ask to see what your home and family looks like.
Hope you remember these tips when preparing for your trip to the capital exotica – Fiji!
