Tourism Fair 2011 in Durban is proving a successful show for Zimbabwean tourism, with stakeholders reporting that they have sealed a number of deals. The development has raised hopes that the nation’s tourism sector is on the road to recovery after years in the wilderness.
More than 27 Zimbabwean private and public sector tourism companies and stakeholders took part in the fair that marks a change in the country’s tourism sector.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Chief Executive, Karikoga Kaseke stated that “it is clear that Zimbabwe has made a strong come back to the market as the second best tourism destination in the region after South Africa. Zimbabwe’s goal, this year is to increase its market share globally, increase the number of foreign and domestic tourist arrivals, as well as increase the tourism’s contribution to GDP and to create jobs in the country”.
Zimbabwe’s tourism sector was badly affected by the domestic economic problems and foreign sanctions on the country. But things are improving the Zimbabwean tourism with more and more visitors arriving at Harare or Bulawayo airports in the past two years. International Tourism Board predicted this march that looking at the present trend Zimbabwe can become the fastest growing destination for the foreign tourists for the next decade, second only to China.
