The confirmation of Osama Bin Laden’s death this Sunday has led the American President, Barrack Obama to announce a Global travel Alert amid rising concerns over threats to US travelers and other passengers that might come about as a measure of vengeance. Although the alert does not explicitly mention Greece in the list but since it’s a ‘Global’ alert, precautions have to be taken for Greece too.
But ought it to have an effect on your traveling plans? Traveling should not be an issue as long as no more threats are received and no more security measures or flight delays pose a hindrance in the coming months. However, there may be a few precautionary measures that would prove useful.
Firstly, it would be smart to avoid unnecessarily tight schedules between your flights, when and where ever possible. Moreover, check with your airline the time you should safely allow for your security checking once you’re in the airport. Although not heavily packed, your hand carry should contain all the necessary stuff you might need in case of delayed or interrupted flights, causing an extended stay.
Another very useful option is available with US citizens; they may enroll themselves at the State Department’s “STEP” program ensuring regular signals and alerts relating to their travel. It would be best if you could get registered for travel insurance as it can both compensate you in case of any inconvenience and can also provide valuable security information. Last but not the least; do keep a back up for all your important telephone contacts. This will avoid difficulty in case you run out of phone battery.
